UGC Centre for Women’s Studies (erstwhile Women Cell) was established in December 1988 in the Mohanlal Sukhadia University, Udaipur. The Centre has been receiving financial assistance from University Grant Commission (UGC) since 2005 under its 10th plan. Women’s Studies as a discipline encompasses a core area of theory along with the focus on multi/ interdisciplinary. It draws knowledge from various areas across the disciplines from Social Sciences, Sciences and Humanities. As a discipline, it focuses on a comprehensive, critical and balanced understanding of women and Gender questions in India's socio-political, economic and cultural realities and governance. Its main components include women's contribution to society and social processes and their perception of their own lives, the broader social reality and their struggles and aspirations.

Women ’s Studies is in the UGC list of disciplines for the NET and JRF program. As per the UGC list, 80 Women’s Studies centres are getting financial assistance from UGC and the Centre for Women’s Studies, MLSU is one of them. The centre is monitored and evaluated periodically by the UGC on grounds of teaching, research, extension activities, seminars, workshops, special lectures, field action projects and action research, documentation and archive on women, partnership with other UGC centres and non-UGC centres, government schemes and NGOs.

History of UGC Centre for Women’s Studies, MLSU:

Centre has 5 permanent posts viz. two assistant professors, one lab technicians, one LDC, one Peon. In 2018, an assistant Professor (Women's Studies) was recruited. since the year 2018-19, the Centre has been offering one subject at the UG level, PhD, one 6 months certificate course "Women and Legal Rights" (Under RUSA 2.0 Project). With the objectives of creating a vibrant community of feminist academics, students, artists and gender-sensitive human being, following eminent scholars have provided guidance and shape to the centre. Till 2018, the Centre has been actively engaged in a skill and capacity development program for tribal and rural women to equip with their own skills by two One - Year Diploma Course in which stitching, designing, traditional arts like tie & dye and various other skills. The Centre has also conducted various events, awareness programs at the state, national and international levels. 

Prof. VijayLaxmi Chauhan (then Head of Department of Psychology) became the first Honorary Director of the centre in 1989.

Prof. Renu Jatana (Department of Commerce) was the Hon. Director of the Centre from 2012 to 2016. 

Prof Digvijay Bhatnagar (Department of History) was the Hon. Director of the Centre for Women’s Studies till 2020.

At present Prof. Pratibha (Department of History) is an Honorary Director of the Centre. 

Objectives of the Centre are to:

Achieve UN Sustainable Development Goal of Promoting Equality & Empowerment of Women.

Develop gender perspective in curriculum material, extension activities with socially relevant research

Promote and nurture gender just attitude among the academic community, which is to be reflected on attitudinal change and growth of student into human being beyond the gender binary.

Strengthen Women’s studies as a Discipline through teaching, research and extension activities.

Build knowledge base on women’s issues in national and global perspectives

Suggest methods to build a conducive environment for women to take up positions of leadership in diverse sectors, conduct evidence-based research on women and economic development, and suggest methods to promote the inclusion of women in the development of all sectors.

Focus Areas:

The focus areas of the centre are to build new knowledge on women in national and global perspectives and developing a curriculum in women studies to meet the diverse needs of Indian women with a focus to develop an inclusive society.

Women’s empowerment.

Marginalization of women.

Critical analysis of stereotypes.

Strengthen existing knowledge and build new knowledge on ‘Women in Indian Perspective’ (to address current and future challenges).

Organizing camps for rural and tribal women to make them aware of health and hygiene.

Community development with a gender perspective.

Measures to strengthen Urban/Rural linkage and tribal development.

Conduct evidence-based research on ‘Women and Economic Development.
